Every decorated cake, donut and ice cream cup in the country ends the same way: something colourful goes on top. Google keyword data for Malaysia, checked August 2026, puts sprinkles at around 3,600 searches a month, climbing to 5,400 in March, with chocolate rice adding another 1,900 that spikes to 3,600 in the same month. That March peak is the Raya baking season, and it lands on every bakery, home baker and dessert counter at once.
This guide covers the topping shelf in trade terms: what the names actually mean, which format fits which product, and what a 500g pack and a carton cost today.
Sprinkles is the umbrella word for small, sugar-based decorations made to scatter over desserts. The meaning of each trade name is in the shape. Jimmies are the short soft strands, and our chocolate rice belongs to this family. Nonpareils are the tiny round beads, sold here as rainbow nonpareils in 2mm and 4mm. Confetti or quins are flat shapes: stars, hearts, circles, letters, numbers and cartoon eyes. Sugar pearls, sometimes called dragees, are the larger polished beads used for celebration cakes.
All of them are confectionery in the simplest sense: a paste of sugar and corn syrup that is shaped, coloured, dried and polished into tiny candy pieces. That is also why technique matters. Sprinkles dissolve if they sit in a wet batter, so scatter them over cupcakes, cookies and doughnuts late, where they keep their colour and add texture. The exception is a confetti cake, where the melted streaks are the point. Adjacent shelves sell sanding sugar, coarse sugar and edible glitter for shimmer work; this guide covers the scatter-on families we stock.
The mix of names confuses buyers, and marketplaces make it worse by using them interchangeably. The practical rule: buy by shape, size and colour, not by name. Every product in our Jimmies series is named with its shape, size in millimetres and pack weight, so what arrives matches what the photo showed.
Chocolate rice is the Malaysian name for chocolate sprinkles: short cocoa-flavoured strands shaped like grains of rice. In Indonesia and in older Malaysian usage the same product is called meses or meses coklat, a word carried over from the Dutch baking tradition. English packaging abroad calls them chocolate jimmies or chocolate vermicelli.
The history is international. The Dutch eat hagelslag, chocolate strands used as a sandwich topping on buttered white bread, while Australia and New Zealand serve rainbow strands on fairy bread at children's parties. Malaysia's bread-and-sprinkles habit sits in the same tradition, which is why the meses name survives here.
Whatever the name, this is the volume workhorse of the topping shelf. Kek batik, bread and butter with sprinkles, donuts, ice cream cones and birthday cakes all draw from the same pack. Our Sprinkles Chocolate Rice (BT-TO049) is the single cheapest pack in the series at RM 9.80 Ex Tax for 500g, packed 30 to a carton, price checked 19 August 2026. For a kitchen that tops daily, that per-pack price is the number to beat.
The series splits into three working lines, and each one earns its place differently:
The right sprinkles for cake work are usually pearls and shaped confetti, while donuts and ice cream take the volume line. The operational point for a commercial kitchen: 500g is a working pack size, big enough to run a service week, small enough that colours you use rarely do not sit as dead stock. Buy your volume line by the carton and your theme colours by the pack.
Representative prices across the three lines, all 500g packs, Ex Tax, checked 19 August 2026 and subject to change with live discounting:
| Product | Code | Per 500g pack | Per carton |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprinkles - Chocolate Rice | BT-TO049 | RM 9.80 | RM 294.00 (30 pkt) |
| Sprinkles - Rainbow Nonpareils 2mm | BT-TO014 | RM 10.80 | RM 324.00 (30 pkt) |
| Sprinkles - Pearl White Mix | BT-TO020 | RM 10.80 | RM 324.00 (30 pkt) |
| Sprinkles - Pearl Gold Mix | BT-TO044 | RM 13.30 | RM 399.00 (30 pkt) |
| Confetti - Rainbow Stars | BT-TO052 | RM 12.50 | RM 250.00 (20 pkt) |
| Confetti - Eyes Black Big | BT-TO057 | RM 14.80 | RM 444.00 (30 pkt) |
| Sprinkles - Pearl Silver 2mm | BT-TO045 | RM 68.80 | RM 67.90 each at 30 packs or more, per the listing |
One honest note on that last row, and an answer to anyone wondering why some sprinkles are so expensive: the silver pearl line is priced in a different band from the rest of the series, at RM 59.80 to RM 68.80 per pack against RM 9.80 to RM 14.80 for everything else. Metallic finishes sit in a premium category across the whole market, whatever the brand. Price a silver-themed cake accordingly, and ask us in live chat about the silver line before you order. These are wholesale prices from direct factory supply with no distributor in between. We state that this structure puts our catalogue 50 to 70 percent below retail, explained on our why so cheap page. Any carton clears the RM 150 threshold for free delivery to Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Both curves point at March. Sprinkles climb from 3,600 to 5,400 searches and chocolate rice from 1,900 to 3,600 in the pre-Raya window, when kek batik, kuih raya and celebration orders stack up in every bakery at once. The topping shelf is a small line on your costing sheet, but running out of it stops a decorated product from shipping.
If Raya orders are part of your plan, count your carton needs early and order before the season starts. Hot-selling packs re-order from the factory when they sell out, and season-time is when that happens. Use Request Quote if a pack shows out of stock, and we will confirm availability and timing.
A single marketplace listing sells you one colour in one size. A sprinkles supplier with a full catalogue lets you build the whole shelf in one order: the volume line by the carton, the theme colours by the pack, and the shaped confetti for the birthday board. One delivery, one invoice.
Happypopper is a registered Malaysian company with a physical factory, warehouse and collection point in Kapar, Klang, Selangor, supplying sprinkles Malaysia-wide at wholesale prices alongside a full F&B catalogue. Customer service answers specification, colour and stock questions in live chat during office hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Self-pickup from the Klang factory is free, and delivery rates by region are on our shipping fees page. The same dessert counter usually buys from our gula melaka series too, and the wider F&B drinks and topping range covers the syrups and powders beside it.
Sprinkles demand in Malaysia peaks every March, and the names on the packs matter less than shape, size and colour. Budget RM 9.80 Ex Tax for the chocolate rice workhorse (BT-TO049), RM 10.80 to RM 14.80 for pearls, nonpareils and confetti, and premium-band prices for the silver line, checked 19 August 2026. Buy the volume line by the carton, the theme colours by the pack, and order ahead of the season.

Sprinkles is the umbrella term. Jimmies are the short soft strands, like chocolate rice. Nonpareils are the tiny round beads, usually 2mm or 4mm. Confetti or quins are flat shapes such as stars and hearts, and sugar pearls or dragees are the larger polished beads. Buy by shape, size and colour rather than by name.
Chocolate rice is the Malaysian term. Indonesia calls the same product meses or meses coklat, from the Dutch baking tradition, and English-speaking markets call them chocolate sprinkles, chocolate jimmies or chocolate vermicelli. They are all the short cocoa-flavoured strands used on donuts, bread and kek batik.
Most sprinkles are built on sugar and starch with colouring, and chocolate types add cocoa. Exact composition varies by product, so check the pack label for the item you are buying and ask us in live chat about the specific pack before ordering.
Our pearl line runs 2mm, 4mm, 7mm and 10mm depending on colour, plus mixed-size packs that combine sizes in one bag. Ten colours are listed: white, gold, silver, pink, blue, red, green, purple, orange and yellow, each in 500g packs.
Halal-certified lines are available on selected products. Confirm the halal status of a specific product with us before ordering. Some of our food lines are manufactured in Malaysia and some in China, and we will tell you the origin of any product before you order.
