A disposable cup is the least interesting thing a drink business buys and one of the easiest places to lose money. Disposable paper cups are bulky, cheap per unit, bought in rolls, quoted in cartons, and almost never costed properly. A shop that can tell you the price of a kilogram of its tea powder to two decimal places will usually shrug at the question of what a cup costs.

What is the difference between a single wall, double wall and ripple cup?

Three constructions cover almost every disposable cup sold in Malaysia, and the choice between them is the first thing to settle before you look at any price, and the difference is entirely about what happens between the hot drink and the customer's hand.

A single wall cup is one layer of board with a thin lining. It is the lowest-cost construction on a price list and it transmits heat straight through. For cold drinks and for water it is completely adequate. For a hot coffee it is not, which is why a single wall cup almost always arrives with a separate sleeve, and the sleeve has to be bought, stored and slid on by hand for every cup.

A double wall paper cup is two layers of board with an air gap between them. The air does the insulating, and double wall paper cups are the default takeaway cup in most of the Malaysian cafe industry for that reason.

A ripple cup is a variation on the same idea. Instead of a smooth second wall it has a corrugated outer layer, so the insulating air sits in the flutes of the ripple. The commercial point is simple. A double wall or ripple cup looks more expensive per cup than a single wall one. Then you add the sleeve cost, the storage space for a second product and the extra second of labour per drink to the single wall option, and the gap closes. Cost the sleeve in before you decide.

What buyers call these cups

The same product goes by several names and it is worth knowing them, because suppliers index their catalogues differently. A coffee paper cup and a paper coffee cup are the same thing. A paper cup hot drink line means an insulated construction rather than a separate category.

A paper cup sleeve is the band that slides over a single wall cup, a paper cup carrier is the board tray that holds two cups, and a paper cup holder can mean either of those depending on who is asking. What is a paper cup actually made of?

A paper cup is not only paper, and this matters more than it sounds. The body is paperboard. The inside carries a thin layer of PE, a food-grade plastic lining, because untreated board would go soft the moment you poured a drink into it. That lining is what makes a paper coffee cup hold liquid for an hour, and it is also what makes the material awkward at the end of its life.

The practical consequence for a buyer is that this is a composite product. It behaves like paper in your hand and like plastic on the inside, and it is priced from a board market and a polymer market at the same time. That is a large part of the answer to the question people actually ask, which is why paper cups seem expensive for something disposable.

Where paper cups sit on recycling and eco-friendly claims

This is where we are going to be blunt, because the industry generally is not. A cup with a PE lining cannot go into an ordinary paper recycling stream, because the lining has to be separated first, and facilities that do that separation are not common in Malaysia. Compostable and PLA-lined alternatives exist and they need industrial composting to break down, which is a different infrastructure problem rather than a solved one.

Paper cup vs plastic cup vs styrofoam cup

Malaysian counters still choose between three materials, and the honest comparison is not the one the marketing usually makes.

For a bubble tea or fruit tea counter a clear plastic cup usually wins, because the drink is the display and the layers are the product. For coffee, tea and any hot service a paper cup wins, because it insulates and because a branded cup in a customer's hand is the cheapest advertising a cafe has. Foam is the low-cost option and it carries a presentation penalty that most drink businesses in Malaysia are no longer willing to take.

That is a materials comparison, not an environmental one. None of the three is a clean answer on disposal, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What does a paper cup cost in Malaysia?

Paper cup price is quoted per roll or per packet by almost every paper cup supplier in Malaysia, which is why the per-cup column below matters more than the price column. Here is the full series as listed on 19 August 2026. All prices are Ex Tax and subject to change. The tier price is the quantity-break price shown on each product page, and the cost per cup is calculated from it where one exists.

Two figures in that table are worth pausing on. The 8oz double wall at RM 0.236 is cheaper per cup than a printed popcorn cup at RM 0.272, despite being a more complex cup, because the popcorn cups are bigger and carry printing. And the cheapest item on the whole list is the sealing paper at RM 0.016 per seal, which is the sort of number that tells you where not to spend your attention.

Why is the carton price the only paper cup price that matters?

This is the part most buyers miss, and it is worth a paragraph of its own.

Nine of the sixteen products carry a quantity-break price that only appears once you open the individual product page. It is not shown on the category listing. And in every single case, the break lands at exactly one carton.

Savings are the tier price against the single-unit price, rounded to the nearest whole percent. The three popcorn cups, the cup paper sleeves, both HDPE cup holder bags and the sealing paper carry no published quantity break.

The practical rule is short. If you will use a full carton within a reasonable window, buy the carton. Otherwise you are paying a broken-carton premium of up to 24 percent for the privilege of taking one roll fewer than a full one.

On the 8oz ripple cup that is the difference between RM 0.365 and RM 0.278 per cup. On a thousand cups a month it is real money for a decision that takes no effort.

The reverse also holds. If a flavour of cup is going to sit in your store room for eight months, the carton price is not a saving, it is capital in a cupboard. Buy the rolls.

How do you work out the cost of one served cup?

What you hand a customer is a paper cup and lid, sometimes a sleeve, and sometimes a bag or a carrier. That whole stack is your real packaging cost per drink, not the cup on its own, and working it out is a two-minute calculation.

Step one. Take the per-cup figure from the table above for the cup you use.

Step two. Add the per-lid figure for the lid you use.

Step three. Add anything else that goes out with it. A sleeve is RM 0.036 to RM 0.037 if your cup needs one, a single cup bag RM 0.049, a double cup bag RM 0.098, a two-cavity carrier tray RM 0.188 and a sealing paper RM 0.016.

Worked through, a double wall cup with a lid and no sleeve lands somewhere in the mid thirty sen range per served drink, and adding a takeaway bag pushes it up by another five sen. On a RM 12 cheese-foam drink that is under three percent of the ticket. On a RM 3 kopi it is more than ten percent. Same cup, very different significance, and that is why the number is worth knowing rather than guessing.

A mismatched cup and lid is the single most common ordering error in this category, and it costs more than any price difference in the table above. One message avoids it.

Which paper cup size fits which hot or cold drink?

Paper cup size is quoted in fluid ounces and the numbers are not arbitrary. They map onto drinks fairly tightly.

Millilitre equivalents are the standard conversion from US fluid ounces, rounded, and are given for orientation rather than as a fill-line specification.

Two notes for a Malaysian counter. First, 8oz and 12oz cover most of what a small cafe actually sells, and adding 10oz is a third size to store and a third lid line to keep straight, so add it only when a specific drink needs it. Second, the three popcorn cups are printed with a popcorn design, so they are not a neutral cup you can use for drinks. If you run a popcorn counter they pair with the popcorn kernel and seasoning range; if you run a drinks counter they are the wrong product.

What else does a disposable paper cup order need?

Six of the sixteen products are not cups or lids at all. They are the paper products and bags that get a cup from your counter to a car, and this part of the range is usually bought as an afterthought. The variety here is small and each item does one job.

Sleeves

Sleeves are the one accessory where colour and branding come up, because a sleeve is the most visible surface on a takeaway cup and doubles as a small piece of advertising.

Two sleeve products sit in this series: the cone paper sleeves (IC-T0008, 500 per packet, RM 0.037 each at carton price) and the cup paper sleeves (IC-T0009, 600 per packet, RM 0.036 each). Both are plain. If you want a sleeve printed with your own branding as part of your marketing, that is a printing job rather than a stock purchase.

A sleeve is only necessary on a single wall cup. If you are running double wall or ripple, you are already paying for the insulation in the cup, and adding a sleeve on top is paying twice for the same job.

Cup carrier trays and cup holder bags

The detachable cup carrier tray (TK-T0011) is a two-cavity board tray at RM 0.188 each at carton price. The word that matters is detachable: two customers taking one cup each can split the tray instead of arguing over it. It is the product most people mean when they search for a paper cup holder, and it is what you want for a two-drink order handed over a counter.

The HDPE cup holder bags are the alternative for delivery and for orders that leave on a motorcycle. Single cup (PK-T0009, 160mm x 280mm) is RM 0.049 each and double cup (PK-T0010, 230mm x 280mm) is RM 0.098. They hold the cup upright, which a flat carrier tray on a bike does not, and the convenience of that on a rider handover is worth more than the four sen the bag costs.

If you do any volume through a delivery platform, these two bags are inexpensive insurance. A spilled drink costs you the drink, the packaging, the delivery fee and the review.

Leak proof sealing paper

PK-T0019 is a 130mm food grade sealing paper at RM 0.016 per seal, used with a cup sealing machine rather than a lid. A sealed cup is the format most bubble tea counters use, partly for spill control and partly because a machine seal is a visible hygiene signal that a hand-pressed lid is not.

The listing states it is for a 95mm cup. Note that no 95mm cup appears in this Paper Cup Series, so if you are buying the sealing paper you are almost certainly pairing it with a cup from another part of the range. Confirm which one with us rather than assuming.

What does it cost to deliver paper cups in Malaysia?

Freight is a bigger factor here than on almost anything else a drink business buys, and it is the part no supplier price list mentions. A carton of 500 cups weighs very little and takes up a lot of space, so cups are charged by the volume they occupy rather than by what they weigh. That inverts the usual logic: with syrup you worry about weight, with cups you worry about air.

Three things follow from that table, and they are worth acting on.

A single carton of cups usually does not reach RM 150. A carton of 8oz double wall is RM 118.00. A carton of 10oz is RM 128.00, 12oz is RM 138.00, 8oz ripple is RM 139.00, the 80mm lid carton is RM 100.00 and the carrier tray carton is RM 112.80. None of those clears the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur free-delivery line on its own. Order the paper cup and lid together and you are past it comfortably, which is how most counters should be buying anyway.

Outside Selangor and Kuala Lumpur there is no free-delivery line at all. It is courier by calculation or RM 130 a pallet, and for a bulky low-value product a pallet becomes the sensible option far sooner than operators expect.

If you are running a counter in Johor Bahru, Penang, Ipoh, Melaka or Seremban and you order cups monthly, ask us to compare a quarterly pallet against three courier runs before you assume the small order is cheaper. For Kuching and Kota Kinabalu the same logic applies with sea freight, which is worth arranging early rather than at the point of need.

Self-pickup is free. For a Klang Valley operator with a van and a slow Tuesday, that is the cheapest freight in the table.

What should a Malaysian buyer check before ordering cups in bulk?

A checklist that takes five minutes and repays it, whichever paper cup supplier your business buys from.

Convert every quote to cost per cup. Suppliers quote per roll, per packet, per carton and per thousand, and none of those are comparable until you divide. This is the single biggest source of bad decisions in disposable cup buying.

Confirm the lid before you order the cup. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the error that actually costs money.

Check whether a quantity break exists. Every paper cup supply quote should be compared at carton price, and the break sits on the product page, not the category page. Nine of these sixteen have one and seven do not.

Count your storage space honestly. Cups are a low-density product and a carton of 500 is a large box. Four cartons is a corner of a small store room. Cheap per cup is not cheap if it displaces something you sell.

Decide whether you are a double wall shop or a single wall plus sleeve shop, and stop mixing. Two systems means two stock lines, two reorder points and staff making a judgement call at the counter.

Ask your paper cup supplier what else can travel in the same delivery. Cups are bulky and light, most other stock is dense and heavy, and one consolidated drop beats three small ones.
